Calculators, receipts and guides that go with this estimate.
Moving customers want certainty, and the honest answer is that most local moves are priced by time. A good estimate gives them a realistic range by showing the inputs: crew size, truck size, an hourly rate, an estimated number of hours and the extras. The inventory drives everything, so list the main rooms and big items you're basing your numbers on. Stairs, elevators, long walks from the door to the truck and items like pianos and gun safes add time that customers don't anticipate. Make clear whether the estimate is binding or non-binding and what liability coverage the customer gets by default. Interstate moves are regulated at the federal level and local moves by states, so check the rules that apply to your moves.
What's the difference between a binding and a non-binding moving estimate?
A binding estimate sets the price for the inventory listed. A non-binding estimate is a best guess, and the final bill depends on actual time or weight. Rules on each differ for local and interstate moves, so check what applies.
Why do movers charge for travel time?
The crew and truck are working from the time they leave until they return. Many companies charge a flat travel fee or a portion of an hour instead of the full drive time.
Are my belongings insured during the move?
Basic liability coverage is often very limited. Explain the coverage options in writing and suggest the customer check their own homeowner's or renter's policy.
