Calculators, receipts and guides that go with this estimate.
Flooring estimates are where 'per square foot' can mean very different things. One installer's price includes material, removal of the old floor, subfloor prep and trim; another's covers labor only. Breaking those into separate lines is the fastest way to win a customer who's comparing quotes. Start with the measured area and add a waste allowance for cuts, which varies with the material and the layout. Then list what happens before the new floor goes down: removing carpet or tile, leveling the subfloor and moving furniture. Finish with trim, transitions and stairs, which are priced differently from flat areas. Mention acclimation and the possibility of hidden subfloor problems so the customer isn't surprised once the old floor is up.
Why do I pay for more flooring than my room measures?
Installers add a waste allowance for cuts, angled walls and pattern matching. It's normal and varies by material and layout.
Is subfloor repair included in a flooring estimate?
Often only basic prep is included, because the condition of the subfloor isn't visible until the old floor comes up. A good estimate says how unexpected repairs will be handled.
Can I buy the flooring myself and pay only for installation?
Many installers allow it. Listing material and labor separately makes this easy to compare. Some installers limit warranties on customer-supplied material.
