Calculators, receipts and guides that go with this estimate.
Masonry covers very different jobs: repointing a hundred-year-old brick wall, rebuilding a chimney crown, laying a block retaining wall, or adding stone veneer to a fireplace. The estimate needs to say which kind of work it is and how it's measured, usually by square foot of wall face, by linear foot or by unit. Matching matters to homeowners with older houses, so explain that you'll match mortar and brick as closely as possible rather than promise an invisible repair. Height and access affect the price heavily; scaffolding and lifts are real costs that deserve their own line. For retaining walls, mention drainage and that taller walls may need engineering and permits. Cold weather limits when mortar can be laid, which affects scheduling.
Can you match my old bricks and mortar?
Masons can get close using salvaged or similar bricks and tinted mortar, but weathering makes a perfect match rare. Say so in the estimate.
What's the difference between tuckpointing and repointing?
Both involve removing damaged mortar and filling joints. Tuckpointing traditionally adds a thin contrasting line for a crisp look. Many people use the terms interchangeably.
Do retaining walls need a permit?
Taller walls and walls supporting a slope or structure often need permits and sometimes an engineer. Check local rules before quoting the final design.
