Calculators, receipts and guides that go with this estimate.
Most painting estimates are compared on the total, but customers choose the painter who explains what's included. The number of coats, the paint line, the sheen and especially the prep are where quotes really differ. List the surfaces separately (walls, ceilings, trim, doors, cabinets) and say how you're measuring them. Prep deserves its own line, from patching nail holes and caulking gaps to scraping and priming exterior siding, because it's often half the job. Mention who moves furniture and how floors are protected. For exterior work, weather and temperature affect scheduling. If the house was built before 1978, lead-safe practices may be required under federal rules, which is worth noting. A short validity period protects you from material price changes.
Does a painting estimate include the paint?
It can go either way. Many painters include paint and materials so they control quality, but listing it on a separate line lets the customer compare or buy it themselves.
Why is prep work so expensive?
Good prep is what makes paint last and look smooth. Scraping, patching, sanding and priming take time, especially on older homes and exteriors.
How many coats of paint do I need?
Two coats is common for good coverage, especially with color changes. Ceilings and repaints in the same color may need fewer. Put the coat count in the estimate.
