Calculators, receipts and guides that go with this estimate.
Siding is measured in squares, and that's the first thing your estimate should explain: one square equals 100 square feet of wall. Customers rarely know that, and seeing the count makes the number easier to understand. The material choice (vinyl, fiber cement, engineered wood, metal) drives most of the price, followed by tear-off of the old siding and the trim details that make a job look finished: corners, soffits, fascia, and window and door wraps. Multi-story homes and lots of corners take longer. Hidden rot under old siding is the classic surprise, so set a unit price for sheathing repairs in advance. That way the customer knows what any extra work will cost before the wall is open.
What is a square in siding?
A square is 100 square feet of wall coverage. Contractors measure the walls, subtract large openings and add waste for cuts.
Can new siding go over old siding?
Sometimes, but many contractors recommend removing the old siding to check the sheathing and install a proper weather barrier. Local codes and manufacturer instructions also matter.
Why does fiber cement cost more than vinyl?
Fiber cement material is heavier, takes longer to cut and install, and often needs painting. It's priced higher per square for both material and labor.
