A rent receipt is the landlord's written confirmation that a tenant paid rent for a specific period. It's especially important when tenants pay in cash or money order, because there's no bank record showing who paid what. Small landlords, property managers and people renting a room in their home use rent receipts to keep tidy records for both sides: the tenant has proof of payment if there's ever a dispute, and the landlord has a numbered history of every month collected. A good receipt shows the property address, the period covered, the amount for rent and any other charges listed separately, the payment method and any balance still owed. Some states require landlords to give receipts for cash payments, so check your state's rules.

How long should I keep rent receipts?
Keep copies at least for the length of the lease and for as long as you may need them for tax records. Tenants should keep theirs too, especially when paying in cash.
