Estimates, receipts and guides that go with this invoice.
Web design projects run for weeks or months, so a single invoice at the end leaves you carrying all the risk. Most designers split the price into milestones, for example a deposit to start, a payment when the design is approved and the rest at launch, and send an invoice at each one. Say which milestone the invoice covers and what was delivered. Keep pass-through costs like the domain, hosting, premium plugins or fonts on their own lines, and mention whether they renew yearly. Extra revision rounds or pages beyond the agreed scope are where projects lose money, so bill them as separate lines with hours. Many designers also state that admin access and files are handed over once the final invoice is paid.
When should I invoice a web design project?
At each milestone you agreed on, such as project start, design approval and launch. It keeps cash coming in and makes each payment smaller and easier for the client to approve.
Should I hand over the website before the final payment?
Many designers launch the site but keep admin ownership until the final invoice is paid, and say so in their terms. Agree on it before the project starts.
How do I bill monthly website maintenance?
Use a separate recurring invoice each month with a single line for the plan, plus any extra hours. Keeping it apart from the build project makes both easier to track.
